Overview of Online GST Registration in India

    1. Input Tax Credit (ITC): One of the key features of the GST system is the concept of Input Tax Credit. Businesses can claim a credit for the GST they paid on their purchases and use it to offset their GST liability on sales. This helps in reducing the cascading effect of taxes and promotes a more efficient tax system.

    2. Composition Scheme: Small businesses with a turnover below a certain threshold can opt for the Composition Scheme. Under this scheme, they pay GST at a fixed rate on their turnover and are relieved from some of the compliance burdens.

    3. Reverse Charge Mechanism: In some cases, the liability to pay GST is on the recipient of goods or services rather than the supplier. This is known as the Reverse Charge Mechanism. It usually applies to specific goods and services and helps prevent tax evasion.

    4. Place of Supply Rules: GST is a destination-based tax, meaning it is levied where the consumption of goods or services occurs. The place of supply rules determines whether a transaction is an intra-state (within the same state) or inter-state (between different states) transaction, and accordingly, CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) or IGST (Integrated GST) is levied.

    5. GST Rates: GST is categorized into different rates such as 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, depending on the nature of the goods and services. Some items like essential commodities are taxed at lower rates or exempted.

    6. GST Council: The GST system is administered by the GST Council, which is a constitutional body chaired by the Union Finance Minister. It comprises representatives from the Central and State Governments and decides on GST rates, rules, and any modifications to the system.

    7. Annual Return and Audit: Besides regular GST returns, businesses are required to file an Annual GST Return. For businesses with a turnover above a certain threshold, a GST audit is also mandatory.

    8. E-way Bill: The E-way bill is a document that must be generated for the movement of goods worth more than a specified value. It ensures proper documentation and tracking of goods in transit to prevent tax evasion.

    9. GSTN (GST Network): GSTN is the IT backbone of the GST system. It handles the registration, return filing, and other technology-related aspects of GST. Businesses use the GSTN portal for various compliance activities.

    10. GSTR Forms: GSTR forms are used for filing GST returns. These forms capture details of outward and inward supplies, input tax credit, and tax liability. They need to be filed periodically as per the due dates.

    11. Anti-Profiteering: To ensure that the benefits of GST rate reductions are passed on to consumers, there's an anti-profiteering mechanism in place to monitor price changes by businesses.
